Description
When my friend got back from vacation in Kona, Hawaii, she told me about her magical experience scuba diving. Guides took her to a campsite on the ocean floor late at night. The group sat in a circle and pointed their flashlights toward the center. Krill gathered in the light, prompting a giant manta ray to glide through the camp and over the divers. The 30-foot wide wingspan gently caressed them. I wanted to recreate that moment for her, so I made my first resin diorama. I sculpted the manta ray first. Then I sculpted, molded, and cast the scuba divers, along with glowing light beams. I filled the floor with sand, glowing rocks, and coral that I made with a 3D pen. As I added the colored resin, I sprinkled in tiny glowing fish. Then I sanded the entire sculpture into ocean waves. This project took almost a year, thanks to numerous newbie mistakes along the way, but I am proud of the finished product. A photo fails to capture the complexity or beauty.
